Welcome to the 2017 Bennington PRCA Rodeo!

Welcome to Bennington, Kansas, for the 42nd annual Bennington PRCA Rodeo sponsored by the Bennington Lions Club, Inc. Once again, we have the opportunity to greet old friends and make new acquaintances at this year’s Bennington PRCA Rodeo. Today, the Rodeo attracts some 350-rodeo contestants from the surrounding states to compete for approximately $40,000.00 in prize money and awards.

The Rodeo has served as the Bennington Lions Club, Inc.’s primary fundraising project and it has enabled the Lions Club to sponsor many youth activities in Bennington and the surrounding area.

The Lions Club recognizes that without the support of the rodeo fans that have purchased tickets, the area businesses that advertise in this program, and the many businesses that sponsor the added money to attract the top rodeo contestants, music shows and specialty acts to Bennington, that the Rodeo would not be the success that it is.

The Bennington Lions Club, Inc. members, along with other volunteers from the community, donate many hours of their time and everyone works without pay in order to contribute to the success of the Rodeo. The Bennington PRCA Rodeo is an example of what can be accomplished when a small community works together for a common goal.

John Payne – The One-Armed Bandit

John Payne got a second lease on life when a friend resuscitated him after he got shocked by 7,200 volts of electricity at age 20. He lost an arm in the accident, but he used that apparent handicap and turned it into an opportunity to develop a unique career as a rodeo entertainer.

Payne is now an award-winning rodeo performer who does 35 to 40 shows a year and has won the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association best specialty performer award 12 times. Despite his close scrape with death years ago, he relishes the dangerous profession he has chosen as the “One Arm Bandit”

After the electrocution, doctors had to amputate his arm below the shoulder, giving his act its name. Doctors wanted to cut off his left leg, but Payne knew he wouldn’t be able to ride a horse without both legs and wouldn’t want to live if he couldn’t do that, he said.

In Payne’s show, he steers a mustang with his legs while cracking a bull whip, with buffalo loping around the arena. He drives the buffalo to the top of his horse trailer, following them on the horse, and there he stands on top of the saddle, 20 feet in the air. This thrilling show is something you will not want to miss!

THURSDAY NIGHT, JUNE 1ST ONLY:  Express Ranch/Express Employment Clydesdales

The Express Ranch/ Express Employment Professional Clydesdales. Serving as ambassadors for Express Employment Professionals, these rare black and white Clydesdales weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 lbs. each. Looming over other horse breeds, Clydesdales mature to an average height of 17 to 19 hands, which is about six feet from the ground to the horse’s shoulder.

The world-renowned Express Clydesdales have been competing and touring in North America since 1999 and continue to win numerous competitions. The Express Clydesdales also help raise money for charitable organizations like Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Making an impact wherever they go, the Clydesdales have been a part of numerous nationally recognized parades and events.

Make sure to stop by on Thursday night to watch these gorgeous horses as they perform and show off their immense talents!

Jake Gill Band

Jake Gill Band.  Kansas native, Jake Gill grew up listening to great country music with his grandfather and learning all about music from his music teacher dad.  Gill brings a raw energy and charisma to his music, connecting with both radio listeners and fans who come to see him perform live.

As a performer, Gill qualifies as a “road warrior,” with a full slate of dates on his schedule. He has also worked the stage with such musical heavyweights as Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, and Chris Cagle. But, there’s one performer and stage that stands head and shoulders above them all.“I won a songwriting contest, and that got me on the main stage at Country Stampede, and I opened up for Jason Aldean,” he recalls, claiming that night made him more confident than ever in his approach to entertaining a crowd.

“You can connect with someone and not even know it. It might be through one of your songs, and they may relate to it in a way you never imagined. I like to make a physical connection, through eye contact or pulling them out of the audience and sharing a dance with them – whether it be an 80-year-old or a 2-year old. I think that’s what really drives me as a performer.”
